Washing a cashmere sweater requires special care to ensure that the material is not damaged. Because we are often asked how you can clean your favorite cashmere items, we have put together instructions for you on how to properly wash a cashmere sweater. Of course, you can also apply the instructions to cashmere hats and cashmere scarves:
1. Read the label: Check your cashmere sweater's care label for specific instructions from the manufacturer. Some cashmere sweaters can be hand washed, while others may only be dry cleaned.
2. Hand Wash: If your sweater can be hand washed, fill a clean sink or tub with lukewarm water and add a mild wool detergent.
3. Soak: Gently place the cashmere sweater in the water and give it a gentle squeeze to make sure it is completely wet. Allow the sweater to soak for about 15-30 minutes to loosen dirt and odors.
4. Gently clean: Avoid rubbing or twisting the sweater vigorously, as this can damage the cashmere fabric. Instead, gently press the sweater to remove dirt and detergent.
5. Rinse: After the sweater has been soaked, rinse it thoroughly with clean, cold water until all of the detergent is removed.
6. Drain: Place the sweater on a clean towel and roll the towel up to gently squeeze out any excess water. Then lay the sweater flat on another clean towel and let it dry in a well-ventilated area. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources such as radiators, as these can damage the cashmere.
7. Ironing and Storage: Gently iron the sweater on a low setting if necessary, then store it folded in a dry place to maintain its shape. We recommend not hanging it on a hanger as this can cause knitwear to become worn and lose its shape.
If your cashmere sweater cannot be hand washed and needs to be dry cleaned, it is best to take it to a professional dry cleaner who is experienced in caring for cashmere.
